The human body is made of 60% of water. Human could survive up to weeks without food, but only a couple of days without water due to the fact that water is a primary necessity in maintaining normal physiological systems. Here are some of the benefits of water for us:
· It allows the blood to maintain the required consistency to flow freely to carry oxygen to different parts of the body. Lack of water can increase blood pressure as the blood becomes thicker.
· Water regulates body temperature. Sweating is an important coping mechanism as it cools the body when the water in the middle layers of the skin evaporates off as sweat.
· Kidneys which act as a pair of filters remove toxins from the body through urine secretion. Water is essential for them to perform properly and the lack of which can lead to kidney stones.
· Water acts as cushions for the brain, spinal cords and other vital sensitive tissues. Dehydration can affect brain structure and thus leads to thinking and reasoning problems.
· Water boosts skin health and beauty. The skin is often the first organ that shows signs of dehydration as it becomes more vulnerable to skin disorders and premature wrinkling.
Having clean water at home is so “natural” that most people from developed countries often take it for granted. Water that we consume needs to be clean and free of disease, metals, and human and animal faeces. Contaminated water can make those that drink it ill, with one of the common side effects being diarrhoea. Do you know that there are approximately 2 billion people all over the world that still do not have access to clean and safe water sources within their home?
