Applications
Basic Principle
Multimedia Filter (MF) is used as a pretreatment to reduce the level of suspended particles and colloidalmatter in incoming feed water. Incoming feed water that is high in suspended particles can cause a high pressure drop and reduce the effectiveness of downstream filtration equipment such as reverse osmosis membranes and ion exchange beds.
Typical medias are quartz sand, anthracite, activated carbon and manganese etc. These are the medias of choice because of the differences in size and density. The larger but lighter media will be on top and the heavier while the smaller media will remain on the bottom.
This filter media arrangement allows the largest dirt particles to be removed near the top of the media bed while the smaller dirt particles being retained deeper in the media. This allows much longer filter run times between backwash and more efficient particular removal.
